Wangolina Wines

This Month’s spotlight:

Winemaker
Available until 26 April
Wangolina Wines, from the Limestone Coast of SA, is guided by a simple philosophy: variety first, producer second, region third.

The Wangolina story begins in the 1880s when the Goode family laid down roots in the seaside town of Kingston. In 1999 grapevines were planted to diversify the farm, and with fifth-generation Anita studying winemaking, Wangolina was born.

Today Anita farms 11.5 hectares of vines with her dad John who provides wisdom and a few good stories along the way. Anita’s approach is to make wines that speak to the variety, that are clean and have play and vibrance. The Wangolina range is fresh, easy-drinking and diverse, designed for the modern drinker.

For Anita, it’s about championing each wine’s potential and allowing it to express its true regional identity and become what it deserves to be. Mount Benson provides the perfect backdrop, producing aromatic whites and spicy, peppery Syrah. Its unique climate is shaped by the Bonney Upwelling, where cool Antarctic waters rise to the surface in summer, bringing refreshing afternoon breezes and steady temperatures. This extended ripening period encourages depth, balance and complex flavour.

While Wangolina honours its traditional varieties, Anita is increasingly focused on alternative grapes like Grüner Veltliner and Malvasia Istriana (which we’re excited to feature on this flight!). These varieties thrive in the cool coastal conditions and play an important role in adapting to climate change. By selecting grapes suited to the environment, requiring fewer inputs and minimal intervention, Wangolina continues to evolve with both purpose and care.
