This Month’s spotlight:
The label is the work of Thomas New, a trained botanist and ecologist whose route into wine was refreshingly unconventional. He began in the vineyard before co-founding La Petite Mort in Queensland’s Granite Belt, then deliberately chased experience across regions, scales and styles – from Margaret River and Tasmania to the Wachau in Austria and Sonoma in California. Along the way came stints with producers including Howard Park, Stefano Lubiana and Mac Forbes. Rather than following a neat textbook path, Thomas gathered ideas vintage by vintage, learning as much about what not to do as what deserved a place in his own cellar.
In 2020, Future Perfect took shape with a move to lutruwita/Tasmania. Small parcels are sourced from sites of interest across the island, with the core focus on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, particularly from the Derwent Valley.
Thomas’s approach is lo-fi and low intervention, but never hands-off for the sake of it. He works without a fixed recipe, preferring to respond to the fruit and the season. Lots are kept small, vessels are chosen for purpose rather than fashion, and extraction is considered carefully. The aim is pure, energetic wine with texture, savoury detail and enough structure to keep every glass interesting. Chardonnay and Pinot Noir remain the centre of gravity, but the range has also stretched to Riesling, Shiraz, and an easy-going “House Wine”, all featured on this flight.
Thomas was named a 2025 Young Gun of Wine finalist – recognition that feels well deserved for a label with such a clear voice so early in its story.
Future Perfect has exactly the mix we love at Flight Path: a thoughtful maker, great sites, plenty of personality and wines that are serious about quality without ever becoming self-important. They are vibrant, cool-climate Tasmanian wines made on a human scale – and perfect to share around a table. Come in and discover the future for yourself!
Because life’s too short to miss a good pairing. Be the first to hear what’s uncorking next.
